Notetaker
If an approved accommodation for the student involves assistance with taking notes in class, the student may arrange to work with a volunteer notetaker. The notetaker accommodation must be approved by theDocumentation Review Committee. The Case Coordinator will review with the student the procedures for requesting a notetaker. Requests are made through the Nexus eAccommodations online request system.
Once a volunteer has been identified, the student needs to remember these points, which appear in the Client Contract:
It is the student's responsibility to contact the appropriate person when s/he needs to cancel an appointment. For example, the student needs to call his/her volunteer if canceling any appointment with the volunteer or if s/he does not need the volunteer's service.
It is the student's responsibility to attend class regularly and meet the requirements of the class for credit.
It is the student's responsibility to get a copy of the notes from the volunteer notetaker. Copies of notes can be made at Disability Concerns. Students may choose to use NCR paper also available at Disability Concerns. Both of these services are free of charge.
Disability Concerns recommends that the student form a good relationship with the volunteer in order to make the most effective use of this accommodation.
Typist
If an approved accommodation for the student involves assistance with typing papers, the student may arrange the volunteer services of a typist. Use of a typist must be approved by the Documentation Review Committee. The Case Coordinator will review with the student the procedures for requesting this assistance. Requests are made through the Nexus eAccomodations online request system and must be submitted five (5) full business days prior to the needed date with the material that is to be typed. Advance notice that the student is going to request a typist on a certain date will help ensure that one is available.
The student needs to inform the Accommodations Office if the services of any volunteer is no longer needed. The volunteer may then be available to assist another student.
Accessible Seating
The student may require a seating adaptation to the physical classroom environment. Such adaptations may include, but are not limited to, a specific type of chair, and/or a table/writing surface. All such requests must be approved by the Documentation Review Committee. The Case Coordinator will review with the student the procedures for completing a Seating Accommodation form.
